Die kontrastierende Betrachtung sprachlicher Phänomene ist nach wie vor ein fester Bestandteil sprachwissenschaftlicher Forschungsmethoden. Kontraste erlauben der menschlichen Wahrnehmung, einzelne Sprachphänomene wie Sprachlaute, Wörter und Sätze zu erkennen. In der Linguistik finden sich inzwischen zahlreiche Arbeiten in den Bereichen Pragmatik, Semantik, Lexikologie, Typologie und Grammatiktheorie, die sich der Methode der Kontrastiven Sprachbetrachtung bedienen. Dass Lernende beim Lernen versuchen, die bereits in ihrer Kognition gespeicherten Kenntnisse mit den neuen erworbenen Lernerfahrungen gegenüberzustellen und Vergleiche zu machen, ist bekannt. Im Kontext des Erlernens einer Fremdsprache tritt dieses Phänomen vor allem dann auf, wenn die Lernenden die gelernte Fremdsprache mit der Muttersprache sowie gegebenenfalls einer ersten Fremdsprache vergleichen. Solche Vergleiche sind selbstverständlich und haben ihre Relevanz, weil sie es ermöglichen, die Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der Erst- und Fremdsprache zu identifizieren und zu erfassen bzw. zu verstehen. Dies kann zum Verständnis (und sogar zur Beherrschung) der gelernten Fremdsprache beitragen. Aus Sicht der Lehrenden sollte der Vergleich von Mutter- und Fremdsprache für den Lehr- und Lernprozess daher sehr hilfreich sein.
